Indian classical danceforms are incomplete without the 'Ghungroo'. According to culture and tradition, ghungroos are awarded to the dancer by guru. They symbolise the connection of the dancer closely with Mother Earth.
The Ghungroo elevates the rhythm and energy of the dance; adding space for the audience to enjoy and appreciate the complex footwork by the dancer.
This artwork is my homage to this beautiful tradition of the Indian Classical dancers.

This creative pursuit allowed me to explore the many shades of black, white and everything in between. The choice of composition was purely because of the breath-taking play of light and shadow. Zoom in to see the minutest details that create the stars, clouds and the fine lines for snow.

Grace

This is a contrasting tale of black and white. Through skin and fur, I bring forth a new dimension to my horse series. This is the first time, I have captured two horses in a single frame and that is what adds to the overall grace of this artwork.
Both the horses have their individual character and personality, one is white and the other black; one holds the head high while the other bows with grace.
A piece of beauty for all art and horse lovers, this is a must have.

Naaz
49" x 36"
Charcoal & Graphite on White Archival Paper
'Naaz' as the name suggests, is symbolic to pride. With this subject, my core focus was the eyes and how I could bring the emotive power of 'pride' in them.
The jewellery and veil were used to portray and amplify the sense of achievement, and at the same time capture the contrasting theme of a reserved personality.
Pride is tasteless, colourless and sizeless and yet is the hardest thing to depict and this was a major challenge here. A little imbalance and "Naaz" would have been labelled Garoor. I hope my vision translates to you in the same form I envisioned it.

Euphonic

As a small boy, I heard the melody of a popular Bollywood song, I relished it to an extent where I would play it on loop, never once realising that the instrument behind was a Saxophone. This childhood memory was carried in my heart, and the charisma only deepened. Though, I could not learn to play this instrument, its music became the accompaniment during my art time. This particular artwork is an ode to my love for the instrument.
"Euphonic" - the pleasing sound of Saxophone is an energy with a power to elude the strongest apprehension.

Kazim

A national champion and my muse for this artwork, "Kazim" is my latest piece from my horse collection. The name is a Persian origin that transmutes to 'patience', a quality that made this artwork possible. A horse is a very gentle being, one who can become your friend instantly when treated right. You need a lifetime to realise the real strength and grandeur of this prodigious species. After meeting and clicking many different horses, he was my choice - the black velvety skin, the slender body, the ears that stand upright throughout and the depth in his eyes captivated me.
Witnessing this beauty upclose, and bringing the same brawn and emotion on paper was a challenge, I put myself up to. The small white peck on his forehead has been the highlight for me - a character that distinguishes him from others - the one that builds his robust identity.

Devotion

God in my God's hands'; there is nothing more beautiful than to see Shree Ganesha enjoying a sacred bath in the hands that always fold before him. Creating every part of the sketch took as much patience as the hardwork, but with all the hours of silence and sweat, came the immense amounts of divinity. There couldn't be a greater pleasure than letting my hands work upon the intricacies of an artwork such as this.

Damini

Damini', when translated, means lightening. Depicting the spark, the strength, force, speed, agility and spirit of a lightening bolt that strucks the sky to a standstill, the horse proves to be the metaphorical representation of it. From working on the best reference picture to conceptualizing the background and working on every little detail, it kept me connected. Even though there are thousands of colours, I crave the beauty of black and white.

Maharaj

The gallant leader who gifted us Swaraj, ruled not just lands but hearts; his famous statue from Raigad is used as a reference here for this sketch. The Sahyadri mountains are a witness of his courage. His eyes shine with determination and pride, his shoulders, straightened up, show the immense amount of respect, and the grasp, the hold of his hand on the sword, out of that oozes out the river of strength he possesses in his soul. Sitting on his throne, "Maharaj" is the artistic expression of the unmatched, incomparable, undefeated, charismatic and victorious, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Ayuma
49" x 36"
Charcoal & Graphite Pencils on White Archival Paper
From Japanese origin, the beautiful name 'Ayuma' translates to a dream, a vision, and with the power of vision comes the gift to hold endless mystery, strength, depth and innumerable, unimaginable stories. Working on an art piece like this, the emotion and mystery witnessed a rise in me too. Creating every nook of this, not just the eyes but primarily the part of her face that's hidden, evolves a highly sensitive aura around her.

Satvva

Out of the three gunas, 'Satvva' is one of them, representing the sight, the power to hold one's senses in place, and not be obstructed by 'Rajas' and 'Tamas'. To have the sight, the vision, the goal, right infront of one's eyes, right at the centre of one's focus is a blessing. The horse, it's body in movement, may stand for the journey one is entitled to on the spiritual path, and the looking back might be the imagery of obstructions in the way. Entering the light, it displays an innate sense of peace and purity.

Sarvesha

Just how 'Sarvesha' means the one who conquers all, the perfection of her hands, her feet, tell the importance of control and balance in an artform like Kathak. The piece of art comes alive, as if the hands and the feet will move and the music would reverberate.

Vedika
52" x 37"
Charcoal & Graphite Pencils on White Archival Paper
Sitting expressionless and yet full of expressions, with one of her hands on the strings and the other supporting the instrument from beneath, she looks ahead but in real, she's looking into nothingness, because her head is tilted and her ears are only prompted to hear the sound it produces. Vedika, full of knowledge, is just like the filled vessel, which stays silent, peaceful, in her world, and lets her hands do the magic and produce striking sounds that leaves one in awe. The calm on her face shows the exact amount of focus required to master a skill such as this.

Minerva

Charcoal & Graphite Pencils on White Archival Paper
The beautiful personification of learning, wisdom and intellectualism, Minerva, with her graceful flower crown and flowy attire, is the exact representation of what a woman possesses in her soul. She is the mother of the Earth, the best friend of the galaxy and the love of God himself. When I see this picture, I see her growing, learning to defeat what would break her. Her intellect never lets her down. The crown that she wears has thrones and flowers, thrones that keep challenging her spine of strength, and flowers that are the sign of her glory. She is an Italian Goddess.

Mauli

Under the shade of a tree, with the scorching rays of the sun, nothing seems to bother the farmer with a motherly care, a motherly peace on his face. For years I've seen him follow the everyday ritual of toiling under the sun; the depth of the emotion is surely bought out as the model is a real life farmer, one from the Warkari Sampraday around whom I grew up.

Naad

The word 'Naad' in itself, holds an oceanic depth in it. As simple as it's meaning is, which is 'sound', or 'dhvani', or 'music', it holds an even greater amount of details, and minute intricacies. Eyes closed, and mind lost in the sound, in the 'Naad', it shows how music gives birth to vibrations that may not be heard but are felt the most, even by the ones that can't listen, the vibrations that may not reach your ears but flow in your entire body, in every single vessel.

Anahata

'Anahata', meaning a sound produced without touching two parts, is magical in itself. It also means pure, or clean, stainless. Anahata, is one of the chakras of our soul.
At the level of Anahata, appears the possibility to integrate the two opposite forces and obtain the effect of sound, without touching the two forces. This silence that exists between these two notes is so tender, and piercing, it is making her forget the chaotic world around her.
